Billy Corgan thinks The Smashing Pumpkins are “one of the most misunderstood bands in the history of rock ‘n’ roll.” That’s what the alt-rock act’s frontman told Joe Rogan during a near-three-hour conversation on the latter’s über-popular podcast.
As the guest on a new episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Corgan touched on a myriad of topics. At one point the pair started to discuss the renewed popularity of once-derided bands Nickelback and Creed.
While talking about polarizing music acts, Corgan said, “You’re about to see that Nickelback and Creed are about to go on a huge run of business. … They survived [the hate], and now comes the inevitable moment of, ‘It was really good’ … they wrote a lot of great songs.”
On that note, Corgan said that he believes that the Pumpkins will get more respect as the years go by, remarking, “It’s kind of how I feel about my musical life. Time will tell my story much better than I did.”
He went on to say that it used to annoy him to be compared to some of his musical peers who have since died and seen their legacies elevated to new heights. “It bothered me because it felt unfair or it felt like I was being sort of made to pay for the sins of the people who are no longer here,” noted Corgan. “Particularly, in Gen X, we’ve had so many great talents die.”
As the conversation continued, the attention turned toward the Pumpkins, with Corgan declaring, “We’re probably one of the most misunderstood bands in the history of rock ‘n’ roll,” adding, “That sounds like a wrestling statement, but it’s fairly accurate.”
