Actress Sarah Street chatted about starring in the Off-Broadway play “Beckett Briefs.”
It is being performed at The Irish Repertory Theatre in New York, and it ends on Sunday, March 16th.
‘Beckett Briefs’
The show features three short plays by Samuel Beckett that run the gamut of existence from birth to the afterlife: “Not I,” “Play,” and “Krapp’s Last Tape.”
On her experience doing “Beckett Briefs,” she said, “It has been such an incredible experience so far and thankfully we still have three weeks to go.”
“As an actor, this show is incredibly demanding physically and technically so I’m lucky that my cast members and the whole company are all incredibly kind, lovely people and just a joy to be around, it makes coming to work easy,” she elaborated.
She is drawn to the show for several reasons. “I love the cast,” she exclaimed. “Besides from that, I love how much it has truly terrified me as a performer and stretched me and challenged me.”
“I am forever grateful to our director, Ciarán O’Reilly for trusting me with it,” she expressed.
Lessons learned from this play
On the lessons learned from this show, she revealed, “I learned that I am still growing so much as an actor, there’s still so much more to learn, but ultimately it has taught me to trust the work that I’ve done.
Working with Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham
Street opened up about working with Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham. “Murray is an utter gem,” she said.
She continued, “He is an inspiration, and chatting with him off stage has taught me so much. He is warm and kind and hearing him talk about his work has been reassuring, it has helped me to understand that it doesn’t matter how much success you have, the same feelings of doubt are always there, you just accept them and continue moving forward.”
The digital age
On being a part of the digital age, she acknowledged, “I try not to think too much about it.”
Advice for young and emerging actors
For young and aspiring actors, she said, “Get the training first, before you start looking for an agent of trying to book work, make sure you are solid. The Barrow Group has amazing classes for actors.”
“Make your own work with your peers, say yes to everything for a while, and then you can get more selective when you have some significant experience under your belt,” she noted.
“Be good to work with, don’t be a pain in the ass, but don’t allow anyone to treat you poorly,” she added.
Success
On her definition of success, she said, “Doing what you love, and rolling around in money.”
Closing thoughts on ‘Beckett Briefs’
For fans and viewers, she remarked about the play, “I hope that it moves them in some way, lends them some understanding about this human experience we are all collectively having, and maybe even uplifts them.”
