Welcome back to Origins, our recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, indie folk favorites The Head and the Heart return to announce their sixth album, Aperture, and break down “After the Setting Sun.”
The Head and the Heart are back to announce their sixth album, Aperture, set for release on May 9th. To go along with the announcement, Consequence is premiering the album’s lead single, “After the Setting Sun,” and sharing the band’s Origins breakdown.
Aperture arrives with a sense of new for The Head and the Heart. For one, it’s their first release since signing to Verve Forecast, joining fellow folk and Americana talents like Madison Cunningham and Joy Oladokun. But perhaps more crucially, the project is the band’s first entirely self-produced album, and their first with a brand new songwriting style. Each band member brought something different to the process, trying out new roles and centering Aperture as the work of a band, not just a songwriter and his instrumentalists.
This is evident in “After the Setting Sun,” which kicks off the 12-track album with harmony-laden majesty and homespun folk. There’s a marked indifference toward a perfection-minded sound, letting the rawness of their swirling voices shine through. And even with some newer elements in the mix, Jonathan Russell’s aching, expressive voice is still front and center; his performance on the track recalls the band’s hungry early days while also having enough power and grit to lead The Head and the Heart into this intriguing new era.
To support the album, The Head and the Heart have announced a lengthy tour kicking off on May 31st in Detroit. Subsequent cities include Toronto, Atlanta, Nashville, New York, Chicago, and more. See the full schedule below.
