Karla Sofía Gascón to Attend Oscars, Netflix Paying Expenses

Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón will be attending the Oscars after all. What’s more, Netflix will be paying the expenses for the Best Actress nominee to attend the ceremony, according to Variety.

The trade magazine reports that plans for Gascón’s appearance are “still being finalized.” This includes the questions of whether she will walk the red carpet, take interviews, or be seated with co-stars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez and director Jacques Audiard.

In late January, Gascón’s awards season campaign came to a screeching halt when past tweets expressing negative views toward Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars resurfaced. She responded by issuing a statement acknowledging that her posts “have caused hurt” and deactivating her account, but even more posts came to light, including one in which she says Hitler “simply had his opinion of the Jews.”

Since these posts emerged, Gomez has said that “some of the magic has disappeared” from the awards season process. “But I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just grateful. I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”

Meanwhile, in a recent interview with Variety, Saldaña continued emphasizing her stance that “I do not support any negative rhetoric of racism and bigotry towards any group of people. That is what I want to stand for.” She added that “I’m sad. Time and time again, that’s the word because that is the sentiment that has been living in my chest since everything happened.”

Gascón is the first openly trans actor to receive an Oscar nomination. Since the resurfaced posts, she has mostly been cut from the awards cycle, skipping the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, and the SAG Awards. However, she is reportedly set to attend the César Awards in Paris on February 28th — just days before the Oscars take place on March 2nd.
