How to reset your Instagram algorithm

Instagram now has a feature that gives you the option to reset your algorithm. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Every time you open the Instagram app, its AI curates your feed based on your interactions to keep you engaged for as long as possible. This personalization ensures the platform shows content you’re likely to enjoy rather than random posts.

However, the algorithm isn’t always perfect. Perhaps you casually engaged with a topic, and now it dominates your feed. Or maybe an accidental like or share has led Instagram to believe you’re a diehard fan of something you hate.

Previously, your options were limited. You could signal your lack of interest by hiding posts or searching for new topics to shift the algorithm, or you could start fresh with a brand-new account. Now, Instagram offers a more straightforward solution: a complete algorithm reset.

How to reset Instagram algorithm

Instagram began rolling out its algorithm reset feature globally in January 2025. If you have access to it, follow these steps:

  1. Open Instagram and head to your profile.
  2. Tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner to access your settings.
  3. Scroll down and select Content preferences under the ‘What you see’ section.
  4. Tap the new Reset suggested content option.

At this stage, Instagram will warn you that resetting your algorithm cannot be undone. It will also suggest unfollowing certain accounts instead of performing a full reset.

If you’re determined, confirm your choice by tapping Reset suggested content again in the pop-up. You’ll be returned to your main feed, where a subtle notification will confirm your reset.

After resetting, your feed will show posts you wouldn’t normally encounter, offering a blank slate to rediscover and redefine your Instagram interests. Now, you can engage thoughtfully with content to guide the algorithm in the right direction.
