Everybody* loves Paddington, a delightful British who wears a raincoat and hat and loves marmalade. But what if we told you that very same delightful bear has an insidious background? Well, we’re not saying it’s necessarily true. But the possibility came on light recently when a group of criminals hacked into the agency which represents the beloved bear and his creator, Michael Bond, and demanded the firm pay a ransom to prevent sensitive data being released online.

And no, we’re not talking about the plot of a Paddington move here. The Sun reports that the Rhysida ransomware group, allegedly based in Russia, is behind the attacks. The Agency reportedly reportedly the attacks to the the local authorities. The firm’s president, Judy Edmonds, reportedly sent an email to clients informing them of the attack.

“Last week The Agency was subject to a ransomware attack by a criminal cyber group,” she wrote. “They claim to have stolen data they will publish if not paid a ransom. We have taken measures to ensure the security of our systems and continue to closely monitor them as a priority.”

She also informed clients that there was “reasonable chance” that the hackers would leak stolen files and that it could include some of the clients’ data.

Of course, that got fans thinking. What could Paddington have possibly done that was so bad as to be worth a ransom?

Some suggested that the beloved bear got mixed up with the wrong people somewhere on his adventures. Others posited that he never even liked marmalade at all, and was instead a raspberry jam type of guy. Whatever the issue, it appears its left his representation in a stick situation, and the only way out may be through the revelations of secrets that none of us ever really wanted to know.

(*Well, almost everybody. Not Ryan Reynolds though).
