SNL50: The Anniversary Special featured an edition of “Weekend Update” that brought back some notable characters, but the highlight was Bill Murray ranking the Saturday Night Live news segment’s all-time anchors.
Current “Weekend Update” anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che led the special edition of “Weekend Update” and brought back favorites Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party (Cecily Strong) and Drunk Uncle (Bobby Moynihan). Jost and Che then handed things off to former anchor Seth Meyers, who welcomed Lorne’s Best Friends from Growing Up (Vanessa Bayer and Fred Armisen).
Jost then introduced Murray, who was there to present his all-time ranking of the “Weekend Update” anchors over the past 50 years. But first, he offered up his ranking of the Black anchors, which sadly only consisted of Michael Che.
Murray then dove into his ranking of the “regular ‘Weekend Update’ anchors,” much to Che’s dismay. He teased Jost with a “Colin” at No. 10, but it turned out to be Colin Quinn.
Among his other picks were Dennis Miller, Seth Meyers, Chevy Chase, and the late Norm McDonald. Meanwhile, Tina Fey & Amy Poehler edged out Tina Fey & Jimmy Fallon, because as Murray put it, “It was close, but I checked online and girl on girl is still very, very popular.”
We won’t give away the full ranking or who landed at No. 1 (a funny surprise). You can see Bill Murray give his full ranking below.
