Why Starbucks Is Giving Away Free Coffee

Starbucks is giving away this freebie offer to wake up Super Bowl fans after a late night of watching and/or partying.

According to a survey by UKG, the Monday after the Super Bowl has become one of the most popular “sick days” of the year. A whopping 22.6 million Americans are expected to call in sick today or take the day off of work—up from 16.1 million last year.

In fact, 43% of Americans believe today should be a national holiday.

For those who need to show up and power through the workday, Starbucks is hoping to be the coffee chain of choice to supply some much-needed energy.

“No matter who wins Sunday, we can all win Monday,” Starbucks said in a statement about its promotion.

How to Claim Your Free Starbucks Coffee Today

Starbucks is making it easy to claim your free cup of joe today… as long as you’re a Starbucks Rewards member.

“Not a member? No problem,” says Starbucks. “It’s free to join Starbucks Rewards, sign up by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on Feb. 9 to get your Starbucks Monday coupon in the app. If you join Starbucks Rewards on Feb. 10, just see your barista in the store to enjoy a coffee on us.”

With your membership, there are two ways you can redeem your free tall hot or iced coffee:

  • In the Starbucks App: Apply the Starbucks Monday coupon in the app before placing a mobile order.
  • In-Store or Drive-Thru: Just tell the barista you’re redeeming the coupon when ordering.

The fine print to know about this offer? It’s only valid at participating U.S. stores, including U.S. Starbucks Reserve Roasteries and stores, but not through delivery services.

The promotion excludes Nitro Cold Brew, Cold Brew, and Starbucks Reserve coffee, and there’s a limit of one free coffee per customer.

Also, if you want your tall coffee customized, that may cost you extra.

Still, with a free coffee in hand, you’re set to take on Monday with a little pep in your step—Super Bowl hangover or not.
