500,000 Stoves Sold at Costco and Home Depot Recalled — Best Life

LG electric ranges

There’s been much talk in recent years about the health dangers of gas stoves. They release harmful pollutants into the air, come with a carbon monoxide risk, and may even cause respiratory and cardiovascular problems. However, electric stoves are not without their own set of dangers. In fact, about 500,000 LG electric ranges have just been recalled after causing 28 fires, at least five of which “caused extensive property damage totaling over $340,000” and three of which led to pet deaths.

LG recalls 500,000 electric ranges over fire hazard.

CPSC

The recall notice posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) states that LG recalled the electric ranges because “front-mounted knobs on the recalled ranges can be activated by accidental contact by humans or pets, posing a fire hazard.”

Twenty-two model/serial numbers of the slide-in and freestanding ranges were sold at Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s, other appliance stores, and online at LG.com from 2015 through January 2025. They cost between $1,400 and $2,650.

According to the CPSC, there have been “at least 86 reports of unintentional activation of the front-mounted knobs.” In addition, 28 fires have been reported. “At least five fires caused extensive property damage totaling over $340,000. At least eight minor injuries have been reported, including burns, and there have been reports of three fires involving pet deaths,” the CPSC adds.

To determine if you have an affected range, cross reference the model and serial numbers listed on the recall with those present inside the oven door or storage drawer.

However, if your stove is included in the recall, you will not receive any compensation; you will be sent a free warning label with a reminder to use the “Lock Out/Control Lock function on the range control panel to disable activation of the heating elements when the range is not in use.”

Several other ovens have been recalled in the past year.

Sadly, this is not the first oven to be recalled by the CPSC in the past year.

In November, about 44,000 Wolf Dual Fuel ranges with infrared griddles were recalled over reports of the griddles turning on unexpectedly, “posing a burn and fire hazard.”

In August, there was a recall similar to the current LG one: More than 1 million Samsung slide-in electric ranges were recalled because the “front-mounted knobs on the ranges can be activated by accidental contact by humans or pets, posing a fire hazard.”

In the Samsung case, 250 fires were reported, at least 18 of which “caused extensive property damage.” There were 40 injury reports, “eight of which required medical attention,” as well as seven fires resulting in pet deaths.

Finally, in May, 5,000 ZLINE Wall Ovens were recalled after the company “received 95 reports of incidents of the door spring releasing or breaking through the top of the oven door.”
