Who doesn’t love a good supergroup? Us rude boys certainly do, with great acts like Mutiny and Rude Girl Revue bringing some of the best players in the ska genre together. Today on In Defense of Ska, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts drummer Michael McDermott joins the podcast to chat about his own ska supergroup, The Kilograms. Listen above, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Formed in 2023, The Kilograms feature McDermott teaming up with Mighty Mighty Bosstones bassist Joe Gittleman, the one-and-only Sammy Kay, Craig Gorsline, and J Duckworth. After last year’s pair of EPs, they’ll finally release their debut album, Beliefs and Thieves, on April 4th. They’ll also tour with Big D and the Kids Table and IDOS co-host Adam Davis’ Omnigone in March; get tickets here.

To preview the record, McDermott chats all things The Kilograms, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and ska on IDOS. He touches on all of the ska and punk bands he’s drummed for since the ’90s (a long list including The Bouncing Souls, Murphy’s Law, Skinnerbox, Stubborn All Stars, Mephiskapheles, and, apparently, at least one gig for The Slackers). Plus, he tells the story of playing to one of the biggest crowds he’s ever seen at WWE SmackDown.

Listen to Michael McDermott talk about all of this and more above, and make sure to like, review, and follow the series wherever you get your podcast. Don’t forget to check out all the Consequence Podcast Network series here.

Additionally, you can support the In Defense host Aaron Carnes by purchasing a copy the new expanded, 2nd edition of his book, In Defense of Ska. Meanwhile, Davis’ Omnigone released their latest record, Feral, last year.
