Spiritbox’s Courtney LaPlante for Mistaken for Poppy at Grammys

Spiritbox's Courtney LaPlante for Mistaken for Poppy at Grammys

A humorous moment unfolded on the red carpet Sunday night at the 2025 Grammys involving two of the nominees for Best Metal Performance, Spiritbox singer Courtney LaPlante and Poppy.

Both were in attendance, and at one point, LaPlante was approached by an interviewer who mistook her for Poppy. Rather than correct the mistaken reporter, LaPlante played along and stayed in character, answering the questions as if she was Poppy.

The original YouTube clip has been removed (perhaps out of embarrassment), though some YouTube shorts are still up.

As the interviewer begins the video with, “Here with rock royalty, Poppy,” LaPlante immediately makes a startled face at the camera — a reaction Poppy herself might have if being labeled as “rock royalty.”

However, the quick-thinking LaPlante immediately realized what’s happening, and responded, “I am Poppy and I am really happy to be here nominated with Knocked Loose. I really hope we win.”

The Spiritbox singer even recalled Poppy’s previous Grammy nomination and talked about Poppy’s headline-making performance with Knocked Loose on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, all while staying in character.

At one point, the reporter asked LaPlante how many women were nominated for the metal category this year, eliciting another great in-character answer: “I haven’t looked at that, but I just always know that, you know it’s time for one of us to win. And I hope it’s me or Spiritbox. Courtney is awesome.”

The Best Metal Performance Grammy ended up going to Gojira, but Spiritbox and Poppy both have big plans for 2025. Spiritbox will release a new album, Tsunami Sea, on March 7th, and embark on a headlining North American tour tour in April (pick up tickets here).

Poppy, meanwhile, will kick off her own North American headlining tour in March, in support of her latest album, Negative Spaces. Tickets are available here.

LaPlante saved the otherwise train-wreck interview with some well-timed comic relief. We’d love to see Poppy’s reaction to the whole bit, as the two have previously collaborated onstage.
