Guillermo del Toro’s dream project is almost ready. “Frankenstein” will be released on Netflix this December, with the streaming releasing the film’s first images, sharing a look at its lead Victor Frankenstein, played by Oscar Isaac.
The first look was shared by Netflix, and shows Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, the mad scientist responsible for creating the monstrous creature. The film is set in the Regency Era, with Isaac wearing the clothing of the times, with his hair styled long and wavy.
The image was shared on a Netflix event called Next on Netflix, which took place this past Wednesday, where a first look of the film was also shown.
The sequence showed Victor and the character played by Mia Goth arguing. Jacob Elordi, who plays Frankenstein’s monster, also made an appearance. According to Variety, Elordi was seen towering over Isaac’s bed, with long black hair, stitched-up skin, and some red in his eyes.
“Frankenstein” has been adapted to the screen several times, with the original novel written by Mary Shelley and published in 1818.
The book is one of the most famous works in English literature, greatly influencing the monster genre, a series of works that Del Toro himself is a great fan of and references often in his work.
Del Toro’s bond with Frankenstein
Del Toro has been involved with the making of “Frankenstein” since 2007, often discussing it with the media as one of his dream projects.
“This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for fifty years. I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with ‘Frankenstein,'” said Del Toro in a pre-recorded message that aired before the scene.
“And they probably would be right. You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this. I hope you enjoy this small look at ‘Frankenstein.’”
