Mendes shared a scene from the film “Mulholland Drive,” released in 2001. The film is one of Lynch’s most famous, trailing an aspiring actress who moves to Hollywood to pursue her dreams. Directed by Lynch, the film showcases his attraction to the surreal and his ability to stimulate or subconscious.

The scene shows the film’s protagonists, played by Naomi Watts and Laura Harring, as they enter a theater that’s showcasing some mysterious and alluring performances. One of them is a woman referred to as La Llorona de Los Angeles, played by Rebekah del Rio, who sings an acapella version of the song “Llorando.”

“La llorona de Los Angeles or The crying woman of Los Angeles,” wrote Mendes.

“My favorite scene, my favorite song, from one of my favorite films by the best, David Lynch. I suck at words, so I’ll express myself through the incredible perfomances of Rebekah Del Rio, Naomi Watts and Laura Harring. Love you.” She concluded the post by adding an emoji of a broken heart.

Lynch died earlier this week, at the age of 78. His death has inspired many tributes from his collaborators and from film lovers from all over the world, who’ve shared their favorite Lynch films, and why his work was so important and a source of inspiration for so many artists.
