Starbucks will no longer allow people to hang out at Starbucks or use their bathrooms for free. This week, the retail giant announced that it will be ending its open-door policy and will force people to buy something if they want to sit or use the bathrooms.

Starbucks spokesperson Jaci Anderson says the new rules are designed to help prioritize paying customers and keep them safe.

“We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable in our stores,” Anderson said. “By setting clear expectations for behavior and use of our spaces, we can create a better environment for everyone.”

Starbucks’ new “code of conduct” will be displayed in every store and go into effect on January 27th.

“We want to ensure our spaces are prioritized for use by our customers. Our Coffeehouse Code of Conduct is something most retailers have and is designed to provide clarity that our spaces – including our cafes, patios and restrooms – are for use by customers and partners,” the new code of conduct states. “The code of conduct is displayed in our stores to remind customers of the role they play in creating a community coffeehouse that is inviting and welcoming.”

Social media was divided on Starbucks’ new policy.

“And gone is the one reason id set foot inna Starbucks” commented one person.

“Good move. People can just buy the cheapest thing on their menu for like $3 or so if they wanna use their internet” said another user on X

It’ll be interesting to see how strict Starbucks stores will be about implementing the new policy.
