Panda Bear is back with “Ferry Lady,” the latest new song off his upcoming album Sinister Grift.
Built on a buoyant groove, “Ferry Lady” boasts some warm acoustic guitar, psychedelic synth hits, and spacious vocals from Noah Lennox (a.k.a. Panda Bear). His ascending melodies in the chorus are doubled with a sweet high harmony, eventually building to a choir-like high sung in his falsetto; meanwhile, the track’s synth-based backdrop becomes more engrossing and frenetic.
“Ferry Lady” also arrives with a particularly uncanny music video directed by Danny Perez. The visual features a variety of faces constantly rotating, with some more jarring than the others — certain faces have slugs, claws, snails, gaping mouths, or otherwise striking makeup looks, and they cycle at such a fast rate that it all blends into a bizarre collage. It’s unknown if Perez used AI to craft the video’s subjects, but based on the frequently-used warping effects, it sure looks like AI was a part of the equation. “Ferry Lady” follows October’s release of “Defense,” which featured Cindy Lee on guitar and served as the lead single off Sinister Grift. Panda Bear is set to go on tour this year in support of the album, and he’ll be joined by Toro y Moi for some North American dates in February and May. See his tour dates below and get tickets here.
