These days, the brand Stanley calls to mind stylish millennials and Gen Zers, toting around massive colorful water bottles. And while the famous tumblers show no sign of slowing down in demand, another popular cup from the brand is in hot water. Today, Stanley recalled roughly 2.6 million of its Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs over a “burn hazard.”

According to a recall notice by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), “These mug’s lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard.”
To date, there have been 91 reports worldwide (16 of which were in the U.S.) of the lids detaching as described. This resulted in 38 “burn injuries,” including two in the U.S. and 11 that required “medical attention.”
The mugs were sold through Amazon, Walmart, Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and other retailers between June 2016 and December 2024. “The recalled double-walled mugs were sold in a variety of colors including white, black and green, in 12 oz., 16 oz. and 20 oz. sizes with a polypropylene lid. The Stanley logo appears on the front and bottom of the mug,” states the CPSC notice. The mugs cost between $20 and $50.
The recalled Switchbacks have the following product identification numbers on the bottom of the mug:
- 12 ounces: 20-01437
- 16 ounces 20-01436 or 20-02211
The recalled Trigger Actions have the following product identification numbers on the bottom of the mug:
- 12 ounces: 20-02033, 20-02779, or 20-02825
- 16 ounces: 20-02030, 20-02745, or 20-02957
- 20 ounces: 20-02034 or 20-02746

In a statement provided to ABC News, a Stanley spokesperson said, “We have addressed the issue and are offering a free replacement lid to work with the existing product. At Stanley 1913, we are committed to constant improvement and are focused on creating quality products that are built for life.”
However, several people commented on a Stanley Facebook post that they could not see the product identification number on their mug.
“The entire bottom of all of my cups peeled up. So this does me no good,” wrote one customer.
“What about all of us who actually use our trigger actions a lot and the bottoms are completely worn off? Chat was worthless and could not get thru over the phone,” agreed another.
Best Life has reached out to Stanley about these claims and will update this story with their response.
