Danny Boyle and Alex Garland have released the first trailer for 28 Years Later, their upcoming sequel to the 2002 zombie horror film, 28 Days Later.
The new film stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes. Cillian Murphy, who portrayed the protagonist in the original film, also appears in the sequel, albeit in “a surprising way,” as Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman previously teased.
As the trailer for 28 Years Later now reveals, that “surprising way” appears to be as a zombie infected by the “Rage Virus.” Per the official plot synopsis, released alongside the trailer, “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.” Watch the trailer below.
28 Years Later is set to open in theaters on June 20th, 2025, and is the first film in a planned trilogy involving director Boyle and screenwriter Garland. Nia DaCosta is expected to assume the directing duties for the second film, with Boyle remaining onboard as a producer. Garland is attached to write all three planned films.
