Istanbul-born musician Onat Onol delivers a deeply emotional and sonically rich experience with his new single, ‘To the Siren.’ The track is the lead offering from his forthcoming album, No Problem Here.
‘To the Siren’ marks a progression in Onol’s sound, moving beyond his lo-fi roots to create a layered, evocative piece that blends his signature lyrical guitar work with lush instrumentation. Drawing on influences from the 90s and 2000s sadcore and emo rock, Onol’s music eschews imitation in favor of forging a distinct voice. The single weaves together plucked strings, distorted guitars, and heartfelt lyrics that confront themes of distance, loss, and self-reflection.
Opening with the raw lines, “I left home / far behind / and all my friends / yeah they’re all dead,” Onol sets a tone of longing and detachment. The song crescendos with poignant contributions from guest musicians, including trombone, cello, and drums by Paul Thomson of Franz Ferdinand. A haunting sample from Anne Charlotte Robertson’s 1990 short film Apologies adds an extra layer of emotional depth, as her repeated words of self-recrimination echo the track’s themes.
Out now, ‘To the Siren’ is a stirring introduction to Onol’s evolving artistry, offering listeners a glimpse into the powerful and reflective journey that lies ahead.
