Opinion’s ‘Microrange’ captures the melancholy of growing up

The track is the third release from their upcoming twelfth album, Troisième Opinion, set to drop on December 6 via Flippin’ Freaks Records, Howlin’ Banana Records, Les Disques du Paradis, and Nothing Is Mine.
Fronted by Hugo Carmouze, Bordeaux-based band Opinion delivers an evocative blend of garage and shoegaze with their latest single, ‘Microrange.’
The track weaves together shoegaze-inspired guitar arrangements with power-pop harmonies that make for a compelling listen. Written during Carmouze’s first months living alone in Bordeaux, the song channels the excitement and uncertainty of being a young adult navigating life in a new city. From struggling with university responsibilities to the loneliness of making new connections, ‘Microrange’ encapsulates the universal tension of striving to succeed while grappling with self-doubt.
Carmouze explains:
“I tried to give the instrumental an ‘Epic Indie Rock’ vibe to capture the excitement of being a young person from the countryside in a city. At the same time, the lyrics reflect how I realized I was messing up almost everything I tried, even though I was genuinely making an effort. And despite that, I still saw myself as a loser, and I felt others saw me that way too.
“The outro, ‘I want to get up, I want to go down,’ represents what was going on in my head during those moments. On one hand, I wanted to succeed and prove I could become someone. But on the other hand, I kept failing at simple things, which led to the ‘I want to go down’ — wanting to hide out of shame.”
