During his interview on Lemon Drop with Karleen Roy published Nov. 14, Ne-Yo, said he felt like “a weight” had been lifted off his shoulders since embracing polyamory in his love life. The R&B star also noted that living authentically has played a pivotal role in repairing his relationship with his ex-wife, Crystal Renay.
“I‘ve not been living my truth for a very very long time. I’m living it now, and you can tell my skin is glowing,” the 45-year-old artist told host Karleen Roy around the 25-minute mark as they discussed his relationship status and requirements.
“I’m in a great space, mentally, emotionally and everything. I realized that everything is not for everybody…Society tells you that you’re supposed to be with one person, you get married and you’re supposed to be together forever. I am not sh*tting on marriage. I am not sh*tting on anyone who has figured out how to make that thang work for them. Again, everything’s not for everybody. Monogamy is for you, it’s not for me.”
In July 2023, rumors about Ne-Yo’s involvement in polyamory began circulating after he was seen holding hands with two curvy women while vacationing in Miami Beach.
Then, in August 2024, the singer confirmed to TMZ that he was indeed dating both women, adding that there was no limit to the number of women he would date at once—provided they connected with him.
He now has three girlfriends: @TheBigBM2023…
Now that Ne-Yo has found what he believes is the right approach to love, he told Karleen Roy that he feels like “a weight” has been lifted off his shoulders. The singer was married to Crystal Renay for seven years before they split in 2023, which, according to a post from Renay, was reportedly due to his infidelity.
Ne-Yo Said He Was Tired Of ‘Lying’ About His Desire For Polyamory
While Ne-Yo has not explicitly acknowledged being the cause of the split, he did admit that he spent a lot of time “lying and trying to be somebody” in his past relationships.
“Complete and utter time wasted when I could have just been exactly who I am, said exactly what I wanted, exactly how I’m rocking, and then waited for those people to gravitate to me because that’s my reality now,” Ne-Yo shared during his Lemon Drop interview. “I don’t have to lie anymore, and I’ll be damned if I ever go back to [being] that person that needed to lie for the appeasement of somebody else.”
Embracing polyamory has not only enhanced Ne-Yo’s love life but also strengthened his relationships with those around him, including friends, family, and even with Renay.
“We’re actually at the place where we can call each other ‘friend’ again because now it’s, ‘This is who I am. Love it or leave it alone.’” he added.
In February 2023, Ne-Yo was ordered to pay Renay $1.6 million as part of their divorce settlement agreement, according to legal documents. The couple share three children.
