After helping Channing Tatum’s dream of bringing Gambit to life in live-action in this summer’s massive hit Deadpool & Wolverine come true, Ryan Reynolds now seems to believe the character could have a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While Ryan Reynolds didn’t give any specifics, he admitted in a recent interview that the suits over at Marvel Studios are “obsessed” with Channing Tatum as Gambit.
During the 20th Century Fox era of Marvel/X-Men movies, Tatum was long-attached to a Gambit film that never came to fruition.
“I honestly don’t know what goes on behind closed doors in the bookkeeping sessions at Marvel, but I do know that they’re obsessed with him in that role. And it’s kind of like the same situation I went through. Once you show that it works, well, that’s really what they need. Sometimes they just need to see it in action,” Reynolds said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“Channing is so singular in that— in how he plays that character. But also he’s so beautiful physically, the way he moves and the way he can pick up steps and create them.”
Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit was certainly one of the scene-stealing aspects of Deadpool & Wolverine so Reynolds could certainly be onto something. The character was largely played for comedy in Deadpool & Wolverine, so if he were to be fully integrated into the MCU, they’d have to find a way to make him a bit more dramatic in certain moments.
Next up for the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be Captain America: Brave New World, which will be released in movie theaters on February 14, 2025.
Anthony Mackie stars in the lead role of Sam Wilson/Captain America alongside Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford.
