The days when an auteur with a vision could finance their masterpiece with credit cards and favors and make it all back by an order of magnitude are pretty much gone. Today, without a budget of at least $50 million, a movie is gonna be a piece of shit. You can’t get any good stars at that rate, your sets will be limited to a single studio apartment and your CGI allotment will be one (1) green screen. If you were hoping for animation, forget it. Just slingshot your dreams down the toilet and go get a job.
But a big budget is no guarantee of a good movie, either. You can have an A-list cast, the hottest director of the year, a whole field of computers and people to man them, to the point that you don’t even need sets, but if no one can agree what kind of movie they’re making or they’re all recovering from divorces and/or rehab or the story just sucks, you’re not getting your Oscar.
That much was proven when a Redditor asked r/AskReddit, “What’s the worst high-budget movie of all time?”
