Metallica legend Lars Ulrich is celebrating 40 years with TAMA Drums by unveiling a limited-edition signature kit. The emphasis is on “limited,” as only 72 kits are available worldwide.
The specs on the kit match the exact specification of Ulrich’s kit on Metallica’s ongoing “M72 World Tour,” which resumes in 2025 with a new North American leg (pick up tickets here). The features include Starclassic Maple shells, a vibrant custom yellow finish, and custom gloss black hardware, plus each kit has a certificate of authenticity signed by Ulrich himself.
As noted by TAMA in a press release, Ulrich’s official relationship with the company dates back to 1984, and involves another legendary drummer:
“In early ’84, Metallica’s grind through the U.S. brought with it some bad luck when all of the band’s gear was stolen. Undeterred, Lars spent the better part of the year renting drums, all the while without a drum kit to call his own. In the Fall of ’84, on the heels of the release of Ride the Lightning, Lars found himself on the phone with one of the top TAMA endorsers at the time, Neil Peart. A surreal experience to say the least, Neil’s gracious spirit led the way and opened the door for Lars and TAMA to begin their now 40-year relationship.”
Specifically, the kit contains two 22″x16″ bass drums, one 10”x8” tom tom, one 12″x10″ tom tom, one 16″x14″ floor tom, and one 16″x16″ floor tom, with all drums fitted with the exact REMO heads Ulrich uses on tour.
The kit retails for $7,999, and is available via Sweetwater. Other Lars Ulrich drum accessories are available via Reverb.
