A NINETIES rock star looked unrecognisable as he appeared on TV 26 years after his group’s global hit.

In 1998 the US rockers released their signature track, which went on to sell more than a million copies in the UK alone.

The Goo Goo Dolls are also known for tracks including Slide and Black Balloon.

And this week frontman John Rzeznik appeared on Australian TV ahead of the group’s performance at the 2025 Yours & Owls Festival in New South Wales.

John, 58, looked completely different compared to the Goo Goo Dolls’ heyday.

He and bandmate Robby Takac have sold more than 15 million records worldwide and have been nominated for four Grammys.

During his Aussie interview John revealed he thinks the group name is “ridiculous”.

He said: “I think it’s a silly name.

“If I had five more minutes I would’ve come up with a better name.

“It’s just ridiculous to me. You just have to be careful what you name your band because now I’m stuck with it. There’s no way I can ever get rid of it.”

John previously underwent a huge lifestyle change and later opened up about his decision to go sober.

He told Metro: “The point that I got to was so dark, it was bad. I was completely counterproductive.

“Luckily everybody hung together with me.

“It was a little weird when I first got sober because everybody would go out to dinner, and nobody would drink.

“And everybody would be texting under the table ‘meet me at the bar after dinner, I think John’s gonna leave!’”

He also revealed playing Glastonbury is still on their bucket list, adding: “If I was asked, I definitely wouldn’t say no. That would be amazing.”
