Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell clearly hasn’t lost any of her adventurous spirit, based on recent social media updates. Mitchell, 37, shared pictures of herself wearing black two-piece workout gear while ziplining in beautiful Costa Rica—an activity she admits was slightly terrifying. “I gave birth twice and that was the first time I ever screamed like that,” she captioned the post. Mitchell is a pro at balancing her career with motherhood and family life—here’s how the actor stays fit and full of energy.
Mitchell gets both physical and mental benefits from working out. “Physical exertion is my therapy,” she told The Zoe Report. “Working out brings me balance and allows me time to recenter and get perspective. Lately I have been into my ‘everything but the kitchen sink breakfast pasta.’ It sounds weird, but it is actually so good! I use up those random veggies that are on the verge and toss in some eggs. Besides that, I love the Sweet Potato and Kale Gnocchi from Trader Joe’s or a huge salad with all the fixings and fresh herbs.”
Mitchell tries to live a balanced life while prioritizing self-care. Her favorite treat? Pizza! “Life is about balance. Between acting, being a mom, partner and running two brands, I dedicate a lot of hours to work and family, so I definitely need to take time for myself,” she told The Zoe Report. “I don’t know that it’s a ‘treat’ so much as it is about self-care and giving myself the opportunity to recharge my batteries. My go-to ‘treats’ are working out, massages, and pizza!”
Mitchell works out four times a week, mixing up her cardio and boxing classes. She also spends hours hiking in the sunshine. “I consider taking my dog for a hike a workout,” she told Us Weekly, adding that Saturdays are her busiest day. “I’ll start with SoulCycle, then see my trainer,” she says. “And if I’m feeling really crazy, I’ll go for a run.”
Mitchell likes to read before bed, usually dipping into magazines before falling asleep after 30 minutes of relaxation. She also loves herbal teas in the evenings. “I’m a big fan of chamomile tea or hot water with lemon and a little cayenne pepper,” she told Us Weekly. “I need to calm down after being so hyped.”
Mitchell wishes she could tell her younger self to slow down and smell the roses. “It’s true what everyone says,” she told The Zoe Report. “Things go by fast. Appreciate that you’re always looking to the future, but — and I mean this — enjoy what you’ve got going on.”
