Singer Ice Seguerra spoke up about fear in the life of an artist and refusing to do things that might affect one’s career, which leads one to walk the safe path.
Seguerra talked about uncertainty in one’s life and career in his Instagram post today, June 13, where he shared an art card about resistance and self-doubt, stating: “Self-doubt can be an ally. This is because it serves as an indicator of aspiration. It reflects love, love of something we dream of doing, and desire, desire to do it. If you find yourself asking yourself (and your friends), ‘Am I really a writer? Am I really an artist?’ chances are you are.”
“The counterfeit innovator is wildly self-confident. The real one is scared to death,” the card further stated.
“As artists, we are all familiar with the whole concept of uncertainty. Nabubuhay tayo nang walang kasiguraduhan (We live without certainty), just to pursue our passion,” he said.
Seguerra admitted that while growing up, he was fearless in pursuing his dreams.
“When I was younger, mas matapang ako (I was braver) to follow my dreams. Pero di pa rin gano’n katapang kasi alam kong may responsibilidad akong kailangan gampanan (But not that brave because I know I have a responsibility to do),” he said.
He shielded himself “from failure and pain.” That, he said, turned out to be a big mistake.
“Looking back, I’ve come to realize that it’s the worst mistake to make when you’re an artist. I have resisted my soul’s growth in exchange of being ‘safe.’ I stopped dreaming big ‘coz I was afraid to fail,” he realized.
Being older and wiser now, and not to mention braver, Seguerra is no longer afraid to wade into untested waters.
“I cannot do that anymore,” he said. “I can’t let fear stop me from being who I really am.” JB
