Against The Current‘s Chrissy Costanza has told us about her experience covering ‘A Whole New World’ from Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ alongside Yellowcard.
We recently teamed up with Chrissy to produce a special-edition magazine as she prepares to release her debut solo EP ‘VII’. As part of the interview, we also asked her about her approach to the cover version, which appears on the recently released Disney compilation ‘A Whole New Sound’.
She said “First of all, I can’t sing the Yellowcard guys’ praise enough. When we first met them on Warped Tour in 2016 and asked them to do the ‘Love Story’ cover with us, I was so nervous because I didn’t want to bother these guys. They were retiring that year. They were way above us and we were just that little new band on Warped Tour. They were so kind and they still are. Ryan messaged me directly and I was super honoured. To be clear, it’s not like Disney approached and wanted a collab or anything. They approached Yellowcard and they could have picked any song they wanted. But they specifically said ‘We want to do ‘A Whole New World’ and we want Chrissy to come and do it with us’. So my heart was already swelling. They didn’t have to bring me into this moment. So to be included in that is unbelievable.”
She continues “There were definitely moments where I got to do more of a Disney voice, like the end, for example, with all the falsetto. Performing it live too, at Epcot, I feel like I went more for the Disney voice. My voice is always going to have that rock texture no matter what I do to it. So I just went a little bit more in the clear, which was actually great for my singing. I’ve noticed that my pitch has gotten way better again after those performances, because I was so focused on technique and not just on jumping around stage, but I had the best time ever. That was the best experience, one of the best experiences of my entire life. It’s always really freaking cute when you get some little kids that come with their dad to a show. But walking out to get food between shows and having a bunch of little girls and boys come over and hug me and be like ‘You’re a princess, can I get a pic?’, that was the best thing ever.”
