Joker: Folie à Deux hit theaters over the weekend and the film has fallen flat on its face in terms of both the response from the audience and its box office returns.

Not only did Joker: Folie à Deux earn “just” $40 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend — 3x less than the original made in 2019 — but it’s actually had a smaller opening than recently panned comic book projects like The Marvels, The Flash, and even Morbius

The film has also been largely reviled by fans as it has earned a CinemaScore of a D, which is the lowest EVER for a comic book movie.

While fans of the iconic Batman nemesis are now just learning of how bad the film is, it appears as though its stars have known since it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September. Although unconfirmed, movie fans seemingly ran a conversation between Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga through a lip-reading program, revealing that Phoenix said “It’s horrible” during the standing ovation for the film.

The failure of Joker: Folie à Deux is somewhat deserved, as the original film was also a bad idea — an “origin story” is antithetical to the quintessential idea that makes Joker such a timeless character — but they got lucky and struck gold. Trying to pull that off twice, and doing so with a movie that has apparent contempt for its own audience and legacy, was always going to be a fool’s errand.

In addition to Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker — a role that won him an Academy Award for Best Actor — and Lady Gaga as Harleen “Lee” Quinzel, Joker: Folie à Deux also stars Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Steve Coogan, Harry Lawtey, Ken Leung, Jacob Lofland, and more.
