But the film star and fashion model had two children of her own, named Chris and Toby, with late actor Robert Stephens.

Acting clearly runs in the family, as both of her sons went on to become actors.

Toby Stephens

Toby was born on April 21, 1969, and, like his brother, followed his parents into acting.

Fans might recognise him from his role in the James Bond film Die Another Day, where he played the scheming villain Gustav Graves.

However, he’s also voiced the iconic role of 007 himself in numerous radio plays.

The actor made his film debut in Sally Potter’s groundbreaking film Orlando, based on Virginia Woolf’s novel of the same.

In 2024, he played Lionel in Netflix series One Day and is the gentleman ghost in Batman: Caped Crusader.

Toby is married to actress Anna-Louise Plowman, with whom he shares three children, Elijah, Tallulah and Kura.

She starred in TV series Black Sails alongside her husband, as well as Holby City.

Chris Larkin

Maggie gave birth to her first son Chris on June 19, 1967, and he grew up to become an actor like his parents.

Over his career, he has starred in the time-travelling Scottish series Outlander, as well as The Facility and Widow Clicquot.

The actor swapped his last name for one that wouldn’t give away his relation to his famous parents.

He wanted to get as far as he could on his own merit, but acknowledged that his parents’ success would help him in his career.

Chris told The Times: “There are lots of people whose parents are in the business who might say, ‘Yes, I got my big break because of who my parents are.’

“Great.

“The challenge is to sustain it. And if you’re not good, you’ll be found out.”

Chris married Victoria “Suki” Steadman in 2005 and the pair share two children.

Chris and his brother released a statement on the morning of September 27, 2024, announcing the death of their mother.

The statement read: “It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith.

“She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.

“An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end.

“She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.

“We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”
