Dawes share new single ‘Surprise!’ from upcoming album Oh Brother

California rock band Dawes has released their new single ‘Surprise!,’ a dynamic and sprawling track from their upcoming ninth studio album, Oh Brother, which is set to drop on October 11.
Co-produced by brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith alongside Mike Viola, ‘Surprise!’ captures the essence of Dawes’ evolving sound. Written during Taylor Goldsmith’s early days of fatherhood, the track explores the unpredictable nature of life. Musically, it combines Dawes’ signature blend of folk-rock, intricate guitar work, and reflective lyrics, all while maintaining a fresh and forward-thinking approach.
Discussing the meaning behind the song, Taylor explains:
“The things you hope for never arrive as anticipated, if at all. The things that scare you are not what you should have actually been worried about. The person you were wouldn’t recognize the person you are, but not in the ways you’d expect. It’s a song about getting older and taking stock in how elegantly (or not) we’ve all navigated the terrain.”
With Oh Brother marking a new era for Dawes, ‘Surprise!’ is a powerful centerpiece, highlighting the band’s continued growth and creative ambition.
