Comedian John Early joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the new album version of his hit HBO stand-up special Now More Than Ever. Listen to the interview above or wherever you get your podcasts.
Early tells us about modeling the special after The Last Waltz, the iconic concert film centered on The Band. He reveals the stories behind the songs that he and his band cover in the special, including Britney Spears’ “Overprotected” and Neil Young’s “After the Goldrush,” and teases the new covers and materials he’s taking on the road for his upcoming tour (get tickets here). The comedian also discuss coming up with the persona he portrays in Now More Than Ever, and how growing up gay in Nashville with minister parents led to a comedic style that turns the mirror on performative behavior and liberal posturing.
Elsewhere, Early dishes on the attention he’s be getting since being featured in Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero” video, where he portrays the pop superstar’s son. “”I don’t think it’s added anything to my crowds; her sales are through the roof, obviously now that I did the video,” he jokes. “People are so excited about that, kind of more than anything I’ve ever done — in a way that sometime’s crushing! The teens, the teenyboppers, they really think it’s so cool that I did that, and I don’t think they care about anything else I’ve done, so that’s been really sweet.”
