Jesse Malin has shared Bruce Springsteen’s cover of his own “She Don’t Love Me Now,” the latest single from Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin, out Sept. 20 via Glassnote Records. Springsteen’s cover of Malin’s 2015 track arrives on the heels of the record’s initial singles: “Prisoners of Paradise” featuring Bleachers, and Billie Joe Armstrong’s rendition of “Black Haired Girl.” The new drop also precedes Malin’s comeback show on Dec. 1 at the Beacon Theatre, which benefits Malin’s Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.

The 2024 version take on “She Don’t Love Me Now” comes nearly a decade years after the original, released on 2015’s New York Before the War, and pairs Springsteen’s vocals with Jake Clemons charge on saxophone. Touching on their collaborative musical relationship and longstanding friendship, which goes back to 2007, Malin said of Springsteen, “Bruce’s generosity, honesty and support are equally as powerful as his songwriting and performing,” he explained, adding that the New Jersey native “walks it like he talks it.” He continued, “Bruce gave it that Stax-soul-thing that we were dreaming of when we recorded the original. It’s so surreal to me.”

Piecing together the happenstances that led to the formulation of Silver Patron Saints, Malin references his recovery from a detrimental spinal injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down. “While I was working hard on my recovery at a clinic in Argentina, I had no idea that my friends and the producers of this record were reaching out to so many great artists to have them do versions of my songs,” he explained. “When I heard these versions, especially “She Don’t Love Me Now,” it took me out of a dark time. I felt excited about life again, in a way that only music can do,” Malin concluded.
