Strange Darling is proving to be one of the most surprising movies of the year as the low-key and tightly-budgeted serial killer thriller has a remarkable 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics hailing the film’s script, cinematography, and direction.
Luckily for us at BroBible and movie fans all over, we were able to sit down with the men responsible for those three incredible aspects of Strange Darling, as we spoke with director JT Mollner and cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi prior to the release of the film on Friday, August 23.
In our 20-minute conversation, we discuss the benefits and pressures of shooting on 35MM film, being influenced by films such as Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction, creating a serial killer audiences can feel empathetic for, and much more.

In addition to Reacher star Willa Fitzgerald in the scene-stealing lead role, Strange Darling also stars Kyle Gallner, Ed Begley Jr., Barbara Hershey, Steven Michael Quezada, Madisen Beaty, Bianca Santos, and Sheri Foster. You can check out the official trailer for the film below.
Strange Darling begins playing in movie theaters in the United States on Friday, August 23. The film marks Ribisi’s debut as a director of photography and is also the second directorial effort of Mollner’s career.
Mollner has also written the upcoming adaptation of the Stephen King story The Long Walk, which is being directed by I Am Legend and Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence.
