Just because Sydney Sweeney has appeared in a Spider-Man movie — the infamously dismal 2024 spinoff Madame Web — doesn’t mean she’s appeared in a proper Marvel movie.
To make a long story short, Spider-Man and all of his various spinoffs (Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter) are Sony movies. The Tom Holland Spidey films are also Sony movies, but they’ve had a decade-old deal with Marvel Studios to share the character, allowing him to appear in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
So while Sydney Sweeney had a role in Madame Web, that doesn’t impact her ability to potentially one day star in an MCU movie, as the two things are technically separate entities.
According to recent rumors, Sweeney has been offered the role of Felicia Hardy/Black Cat in Spider-Man 4.
While the rumors come from largely unreliable sources — sources who’ve gotten some things wrong and some things right in the past — Sweeney being cast as Felicia Hardy/Black Cat certainly seems plausible for all parties involved, as Sweeney has shown a willingness to appear in comic book movies (and likely wants a re-do after Madame Web), while Marvel Studios is in the business of hiring movie stars. here’s also the obviousness of casting Sweeney as Black Cat, as she’s a Catwoman-coded seductress who — similar to Selina Kyle and Batman — uses her sexuality to manipulate Spider-Man.
Sweeney most recently starred in the horror film Immaculate, which was released back in March. In September, Sweeney’s next film Eden, directed by Ron Howard, will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Eden also co-stars Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Jude Law, and Daniel Bruhl. Despite the star-studded cast, however, Eden does not yet have an American distributor.
In the coming year, Sweeney is attached to a remake of the 1960s cult sci-fi film Barbarella, which originally starred Jane Fonda. Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver director Edgar Wright will reportedly direct the film.
While Spider-Man 4 does not have a director nor an official release date, the film has been confirmed to be in the works by both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. Some reports have indicated that, following the massive scale of 2021’s No Way Home, the fourth Tom Holland-starring Spidey film will be more of a street-level focused blockbuster.
