Pacific Rim Sequel Series in Development

Legendary Entertainment is developing a new Pacific Rim sequel series in an effort to further expand the Kaiju franchise, as first reported by Variety.

The television show will be an origin story and the first project to be developed under a first-look deal with Eric Heisserer and Carmen Lewis under their production company Chronology.

Heisserer is best known for writing the Oscar-nominated screenplay for Denis Villeneuve’s 2016 sci-fi film Arrival, as well as penning the viral Netflix movie Bird Box. He has previous TV experience developing Netflix’s fantasy series Shadow and Bone.

“Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself,” Jason Clodfelter, president of Legendary Television, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular ‘Pacific Rim’ universe. We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise.”

The Pacific Rim franchise centers around the Kaiju monsters that enter our world through an interdimensional portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Thus far, there have been two movies, with the most recent being 2018’s Pacific Rim: Uprising. An anime series titled Pacific Rim: The Black aired for two seasons on Netflix from 2021 through 2022.
