After 25 years, George Clooney is reflecting on his highly controversial feud with director David O. Russell. The A-list Hollywood actor reveals he’s taking a new approach to his acting career, and “time allotment” is a significant factor in his project decision-making. He also spoke about his tumultuous equations with his contemporaries from the industry in the past.
In a joint cover story for GQ magazine with Wolf’s costar Brad Pitt, George Clooney shared that he now prefers not to endure unnecessary stress, expressing his desire to work only with “people who like what they do.” He said, “The older you get, the time allotment is very different. Five months out of your life is a lot. And so it’s not just like, ‘Oh, I’m going to go do a really good film, like Three Kings, and I’m going to have a miserable f**k like David O. Russell making my life hell. Making every person on the crew’s life hell.’ It’s not worth it. Not at this point in my life. Just to have a good product.”
George Clooney starred in Three Kings alongside Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube. The 1999 war film is set towards the end of the First Gulf War, following four American soldiers attempting a gold heist amid the conflict. The movie’s production was famously tumultuous, with Clooney reportedly having a heated on-set dispute with director O. Russell.
Their feud was documented over the years as Clooney once shared that the director “yelled and screamed at people all day” during Three Kings. He revealed that the situation reached a breaking point when Russell got physical with an extra on the set, prompting the actor to fight the director. Following their feud, the two reconciled years later as Clooney shared in 2014’s ShowBiz 411, “Look, there came a time when I just said to him, ‘Is this going to go on forever?’ We’ve got to shake hands and let it go. We put it behind us. And that’s great.” Clooney and Pitt’s Wolfs is set for world premiering at the Venice Film Festival before a September launch in select theaters and Apple TV+.
