Almost 20 years after Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies series debuted with the first titular novel in the quartet, am Uglies movie adaptation of the science fiction series is on the way.
The futuristic society in which these books are set contains a cosmetic surgery as a right of passage. The compulsory procedure, which is imposed on 16-year-olds, aims to rid people of physical differences by applying an ideal standard of beauty to all faces.

When will the Uglies movie come out?
Author Scott Westerfeld tweeted that the film’s release date is Sept. 13, 2024. Netflix had previously hinted that the film would come out this year.
Who is in the cast of the Uglies movie?
Joey King will star as the central character Tally Youngblood. Deadline broke the news of King’s boarding the project as both a star and executive producer with McG (Charlie’s Angels) set to direct.
At the red carpet for the premiere of Bullet Train in 2022, King spoke a bit about working on the film, saying the Uglies book caught her attention as an 11-year-old.

Deadline also broke the news of the casting of Keith Powers (The Tomorrow War), Brianne Tju (I Know What You Did Last Summer) and Chase Stokes (Outer Banks) in the dystopian film adaptation.
Laverne Cox (Promising Young Woman, Orange Is the New Black) joined the film’s cast at the end of 2021, as Deadline exclusively reported.

Krista Vernoff handled the screenplay adaptation. John Davis and Jordan Davis are producing for Davis Entertainment Company, with Robyn Meisinger for Anonymous Content, Dan Spilo for Industry Entertainment, and McG and Mary Viola for Wonderland. Joey King is exec producing alongside Jamie King and John Fox.
Will the Uglies film cover just the first book, or all four books?
It is unknown whether the film will branch multiple books or just the first one. After Uglies in Westerfeld’s quartet, come Pretties, Specials and Extras.
