On Wednesday, July 31, Shawn Mendes announced the forthcoming release of his eponymous album, Shawn, due on Oct. 18. To mark the promise of new music, including a pair of singles, “Why Why Why” and “Isn’t That Enough,” due Aug. 8, the musician has followed up with plans to support the set ahead of its official drop by perform a series of intimate theater concert, beginning on Aug. 8 at the historic and newly reopened Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, N.Y.
During the run, the musician will perform his self-titled fifth studio album in full. Notably, the concerts will be held in the cities where the LP was recorded to further illuminate the relationship Mendes forged with select communities during the creative process. After night one at Bearsville Theater, the multi-platinum, GRAMMY-nominated singer/songwriter will hop across the pond for a follow-up at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane on Aug. 13.
Nearly two months later, Mendes will resume concerts in support of his impending album, picking up an Oct. 13 appearance at the esteemed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., just days before the official album drop, which coincides with an Oct. 18 show at Brooklyn Paramount in Brooklyn, N.Y. On the other side of the country, a pair of final performances will occur at Los Angeles’ The Ford on Oct. 22 and Seattle’s Paramount Theatre on Oct. 24.
To mark the news, Mendes commented on the tour via Instagram, expressing, “For my friends and family 🤍 wanted the first shows back to be special & to play this album for you live in the places we recorded it. I’ve never played an album top to bottom before but it’s already one of my favourite shows i’ve ever rehearsed[.] I love you guys, the band and I can’t wait to see you!”
Shawn represents the artist’s most aptly personal collection to date, using lyrical honesty to extend the intimacy of the set as Mendes works through a self-dialogue written and recorded over two years at various locations, including Nosara, Costa Rica; Clubhouse Studio in Rhinebeck, NY; Bear Creek Studio in Washington State; Darkhorse Recordings in Nashville; and Electric Lady in New York City. The record also includes instrumental assistance from Punch Brothers’ Chris Thile.
