Nick Mason Wants to Use AI to Make New Pink Floyd Music

Nick Mason has a plan for potentially sidestepping the longstanding feud between David Gilmour and Roger Waters to record new Pink Floyd music, and it naturally involves AI.

In a recent interview with The Daily Mirror, the drummer admitted there’s no chance of a reunion between the surviving members of the band, but expressed an interest in using AI for a what-if scenario.

“It would be fascinating to see what AI could do with new music. If you tried to run it as a sort of ‘Where did Pink Floyd go after?’” Mason said. “The thing to do would be to have an AI situation where David and Roger become friends again. We could be like ABBA by the time we’ve finished with it.”

There’s at least a small chance Gilmour would be open to such a scenario. Earlier this year, he said he would consider doing a Pink Floyd hologram show — albeit under “very, very difficult and onerous conditions.”

Gilmour didn’t expand upon what those conditions would be, but it’s unlikely his tensions with Waters will thaw out anytime soon, which would make using AI for new Pink Floyd songs a best-case solution.

This is just the latest time Mason has squashed any hopes of a Pink Floyd reunion. Last year, he said that “it would take a Nelson Mandela or someone like that” to bring the group back together on an episode of  The Story Behind the Song. Stream it below.

Pink Floyd fans can pick up a copy of last year’s The Dark Side of the Moon (50th Anniversary Remaster) while awaiting potential AI-assisted new music.

This fall, Gilmour will head out on a limited run of dates in the US, Europe, and the UK in support of his latest album, Luck and Strange. Get tickets here.
