Berry gave up all sugar and starches after being diagnosed with diabetes at 22. “When my trainer Peter formally introduced me to the ketogenic lifestyle a few years ago, I realized all I had to do to feel even better was give my body more healthy fats (like avocado, coconut oil, and butter) so it had more of that fuel to burn,” she told Women’s Health. “Today, eating keto is second nature to me. I feel incredible on the high-fat, moderate-protein, and very-low-carb plan (seriously, I couldn’t tell you the last time I even craved sweets) and wouldn’t go back to the sugar-eating ways of before my diabetes diagnosis for anything in the world.”

Berry’s favorite workout is martial arts training. “I stay motivated with the understanding that it isn’t about me looking a certain way, it’s always about achieving optimal health,” she told FASHION Magazine. “I just wanted to strengthen myself from the inside out. As I’ve grown, I’ve learned that what’s important in life is our attitude, sense of well-being, and sense of strength, on top of being healthy and strong. That’s how we keep the impression of youth — because we keep our bodies younger and feeling strong. We’re more active so we feel like we’re essentially aging backward, but we’re aging forwards and being mindful about how we do it.”

Berry snacks on vegetables if she gets the urge, which isn’t often. “I really enjoy savory flavors, though, so I love snacking on chips,” she told Women’s Health. “Give me a bowl of salt and vinegar chips and I’m happy. I’ve also been enjoying seeds lately, because they’re salty and crunch and easy to grab when you just want a little something. If I have time, though, perhaps my favorite snack is homemade kale chips. They’re so easy to make (I just dress kale with olive oil and a little salt and toss it in the oven) and taste way better when you bake them yourself.”

Berry has her first big meal of the day after she works out in the morning. “A lot of the time she will have a steak with a big green salad and not butter lettuce, it has to be dark greens like spinach and kale,” her trainer Peter Lee Thomas told Hollywood Life. “Or she will have shredded chicken over a dark green leafy salad. Or she might have two or three eggs, not egg whites, she eats the whole egg because the yolk is very important.”

Berry has wellness advice she lives by. “My tip would be that setbacks are a normal part of the process; what matters most is that you don’t stop trying,” she told FASHION Magazine. “The process of rē-spinning your worldview to make health and wellness your reality can and should be done just for you. This is a life-long path of attuning to your inner truth and expressing it outwardly.”
