Mastodon and Lamb of God Talk Summer Tour

Mastodon and Lamb of God Talk Summer Tour

Two for the Road is a series in which two artists touring together chat about playing shows, life backstage, and more. The latest installment of the series features Mastodon singer-bassist Troy Sanders chatting with Lamb of God guitarist Mark Morton.

Mastodon and Lamb of God released their seminal albums Leviathan and Ashes of the Wake, respectively, on the same day (August 31st) in 2004. Now, the two bands are set to embark on the co-headlining North American “Ashes of Leviathan” tour in celebration the 20th anniversary of those landmark LPs, featuring support from legendary Slayer guitarist Kerry King’s new eponymous band.

The North American tour (pick up tickets via Ticketmaster or StubHub) kicks off July 19th in Grand Prairie, Texas, and runs through an August 31st show in Omaha, Nebraska. In advance of the outing, Mastodon singer-bassist Troy Sanders and Lamb of God guitarist Mark Morton connected via Zoom for Consequence‘s Two for the Road video series.

As seen in the conversation in the video above, Mastodon and Lamb of God have a long history of friendship, even dating back to the days when Lamb of God were called Burn the Priest and two of Mastodon’s members (Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor) were still in the band Today Is the Day.

“Mastodon and Lamb of God have been shoulder to shoulder the whole time,” said Morton. “When we stand in a room together, we’re with friends … and it’s been that way since day one.”

Sanders added, “There’s a level of camaraderie, respect, and friendship there that’s pretty priceless.”

The two musicians also shared their respect for Kerry King, with both Morton and Sanders having fond memories of their bands opening for Slayer throughout the years.

“It speaks to the character of Kerry King, a legend in this game … that he puts a new band together and records a banger of an album,” remarked Morton. “Now, he’s going to go out on tour, opening for these guys that opened for him. No pretense, no ego … because that’s who he is.”
