From ‘Old Town Road‘ to Beverly Hills Cop, it seems Lil Nas X is coming for all of the Village People’s jobs.
The Grammy Award winner released his latest track ‘Here We Go!‘ on Friday, a theme song for the upcoming Netflix sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which premieres Wednesday on the streaming platform.
His song features the instantly recognizable electronic riff from the original 1984 movie’s theme by Harold Faltermeyer. The soundtrack won a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.
Lil Nas X previously admitted that his first time hearing the Beverly Hills Cop theme was in a Family Guy episode as he sat down with Axel F stars Eddie Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige for an interview with Netflix.
“It’s Peter Griffin from Family Guy,” he said in the conversation. “He was doing the hum to it and I was like, ‘Wait, that was actually a good little melody from Family Guy.’ And then I saw the movie years later.”
Murphy then pointed out that the 25-year-old musician “wasn’t even born in 1984. … You weren’t even thought about yet. You weren’t even a little glint in your dad’s eye yet in 1984.”
Lil Nas X said the experience recording the theme song was “actually kind of insane,” adding, “I was a bit emotional. And I know my dad and family probably went the most insane about me doing it because it’s so close to them.”
Murphy raved, “It’s just exciting to have some new music and have this brother be the one that’s on it.”
“I’m happy to do it,” said Lil Nas X. “I hope I’m not slaughtered by the people that love the original.”
Murphy reprises his role as Detroit-born cop Axel Foley in the upcoming Netflix sequel after starring in the first three films, which premiered in 1984, 1987 and 1994. Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot also reprise their roles.
The newest installment sees Murphy’s eponymous character team up with his new partner Detective Bobby Abbott (Gordon-Levitt) after his estranged daughter, criminal defense attorney Jane Saunders’ (Paige) life is threatened.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F premieres July 3 on Netflix.
