Fresh off the back of receiving multiple Tony nominations, Broadway company of Sufjan Stevens’ Illinoise stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night to perform “Jacksonville.” Watch the number — featuring lead vocals sung by Tasha — below.
Adapted from Stevens’ beloved 2005 concept album of the same name, Illinoise is a dance-based musical that features music and lyrics penned by Stevens himself, choreography by Justin Peck (who also choreographed Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story), and a story written by Peck and Pulitzer Prize-winner Jackie Sibblies Drury. The production debuted last summer and runs through August 10th at the St. James Theatre (get tickets here).
A critical hit, Illinoise nabbed four Tony nominations, including Best Musical, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations, and Best Lighting Design.
Stevens’ 10th solo album, Javelin, arrived just last year to widespread acclaim. Check out where it landed on Consequence’s list of the best albums of 2023. The artist also recently announced a 20th-anniversary reissue of his album Seven Swans.
