Dylan Minnette, best known for starring in the hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, is getting torched on social media for revealing that he quit acting, his job, because it felt too much like a job.
Minnette, who has most recently been working as a singer and guitar player in the alternative indie band Wallows, made the comments during a recent interview on the Zach Sang Show.
“I was very fortunate to find success in it, but it also started to feel like a bit of a job. I feel like Wallows and music is this passion we’ve always had as a group to really take all the way,” Minnette said.
“I was like, ‘I feel like I’m in a position now where I can just just do that for a while and get this the farthest it can be. And the only way that’s gonna happen is if I put my 100% time and energy into it’… I’m just following what feels natural and inspiring at the time, and I’m very obviously incredibly privileged and lucky to be in a position where it’s like, ‘This starts to feel like a job, so I’m gonna do this now and this will be my job.’ It’s insane but it’s working out that way and I’m just following what feels inspiring.”
Unsurprisingly, people on Twitter who have to work far more strenuous and less fruitful jobs than acting weren’t feeling much sympathy for the 27-year-old actor and musician.
13 Reasons Why, which ran on Netflix for four seasons from 2017 to 2020, has a 35% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series was based on the 2007 novel of the same name and tells the story of a high school student (played by Katherine Langford) who left behind a box of cassette tapes that detail the reasons for her suicide.
Minnette’s last film role came in 2022’s Scream. He’s also had parts in films such as Prisoners, Goosebumps, Don’t Breathe, and The Disaster Artist.
His career began in television in 2005 when he appeared in an episode of the Nickelodeon series Drake & Josh, and would then have roles in series such as Two and Half Men, Prison Break, Saving Grace, Grey’s Anatomy, Rules of Engagement, The Mentalist, Supernatural, Lost, Medium, Lie To Me, Law & Order: SVU, Agents of SHIELD, and Scandal.
