Spring is swing across most of the country but down here in Southwest Florida we are already seeing the earliest signs of Summer as temperatures are breaching 90+ every day and shark season has arrived in full force.
Tarpon fishing season is just getting started here on Florida’s SW coast, between the greater Tampa Bay area down south to Naples with the peak tarpon fishing action taking place between Boca Grande and Longboat Key in Sarasota County. And with tarpon fishing season comes lots and lots and lots of sharks.
Case in point: this clip below from a drone that was flying off Caladesi Island in Dunedin, Florida near Clearwater. They were fishing right off the beach when dozens of sharks began to swarm near their boat in just a few feet of water:
There is no reason to sound the alarms, however, as shark migration up and down the coasts of Florida is natural this time of year. As the seasons change and water temperatures fluctuate, baitfish (prey) often follow those temperature fluctuations and/or hug the shallow coastal waters for protection.
The presence of abundant baitfish in the water brings the sharks in shallow as well. And in addition to the baitfish/prey, predator fish show up and it creates peak fishing conditions which also brings in the fishermen, hence the drone flying above as they were fishing right off the beach.
Growing up in SW Florida, I’ve covered tarpon fishing season for nearly as long as BroBible has existed. Make sure to send me any tarpon fishing videos/photos you would like to see featured here on BroBible! Hit em up at [email protected] via email.
