Oppenheimer has finally been released in Japan, and despite the controversies, it has opened to a positive number at the box office. The film about the life of J Robert Oppenheimer won the most Oscars, and after eight months, it was finally released in Japan. The movie received mixed reviews there during the early screenings. The biographical film was released all over in July last year. For the unversed, the atomic bombs made by the physicists were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. It killed countless lives, and the impact was witnessed for several years after that. Some critics were disappointed that Nolan did not show the aftereffects of such a creation, while some thought it pointed out why people should act immediately to prevent nuclear war. The bombings took place on the 6th and 9th of August in 1945.
Christopher Nolan and his team of Oppenheimer received seven Oscars at the 96th Academy Awards. Cillian Murphy was nominated for the first time and took home the golden statuette for the first time only. Marvel star Robert Downey Jr. won the Best Supporting Actor, and Nolan also took home the trophies for Best Directing and Best Picture.
According to Trade Analyst Luiz Fernando, Oppenheimer posts an estimated $800K opening day at Japan’s box office. The report further claims this Cillian Murphy led has made two times more than what Dune 2 grossed on its pure Friday upon its release two weeks back. It is indeed a sensitive matter in Japan, and the local exhibitors are also aware of that as they display trigger disclaimers informing the cinemagoers about specific images and dialogues involving the atomic explosions.
The exhibitors believed it could be disturbing for the moviegoers, but it seems that people in Japan are appreciating Oppenheimer. As per the trade analyst, word of mouth regarding Nolan’s film is positive and has received a 4-star rating from the viewers, equal to an A- CinemaScore. It is on par with Nolan’s Tenet and 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, as they both have an A-. Other movies by Christopher Nolan that are over Oppenheimer include Inception with 4.1 stars and Interstellar and The Dark Knight with 4.2 ratings.
Oppenheimer is eyeing an impressive $2.5 million to $3.5 million on its 3-day opening weekend. It is the biggest for Hollywood films in 2024 as of yet. At the time of writing this report, the worldwide collection of Nolan’s movie is at $960.42 million.
It has been released in Japan on March 29, 2024.
