Ryan Gosling is simply operating on a different level of movie stardom right now.
Try and think of the last time you saw an A-list actor (not named Hugh Jackman) break out in song during a live show? That’s an art of movie stars past, echoing the likes of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant.
It’s not even a matter of being a good singer — in fact, exactly the opposite — it’s a matter of being a performer so captivating that people let you get away with it even if you aren’t very good at it. And that’s exactly what Gosling pulled off while performing his hit Barbie song “I’m Just Ken” at the Academy Awards on Sunday night.
The performance was so good, in fact, that even legendary director Martin Scorsese — who, following her win for Best Original Song (“What Was I Made For?”), now has fewer Oscar wins than Billie Eilish — couldn’t help but vibe out while Gosling was crushing it on stage.
The video comes courtesy of Marty’s daughter Francesca, who was his date to the ceremony and who has spent the last year or so turning her father into a TikTok star in addition to being an iconic filmmaker.
Given that Scorsese says he still has another few films left in him, maybe this has convinced him to give Gosling a call whenever he does begin work on a project that the Oscar nominee would be a fit for. With Scorsese’s next film reportedly being about Jesus, though, it feels doubtful that be a project for Gosling — unless Marty wants to bring those “Ryan Gosling cast as Black Panther” memes to life and do the funniest thing ever.
