OUTSIDE of music and fashion, self-proclaimed “genius” Kanye West decided to explore another endeavor.
The Eazy rapper launched Donda Academy, a school named after his late mother that provided Balenciaga uniforms.
What is Donda Academy?
Located in Ventura County, California, the institution founded by Kanye West cites its mission:
“Using an ethic of integrity and care, Donda Academy prepares students to become the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators.”
Donda Academy claims to be able to provide its students with a world-class education including its “rigorous core curriculum, and an emphasis on sustainability, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving.”
On October 26, 2022, faculty, students, and parents were made aware that the school would be temporarily closed for the remainder of the year.
In an email chain obtained by The Times, Donda Academy principal Jason Angell disclosed, “At the discretion of our founder, Donda Academy will close for the remainder of the 2022-2023 school year effective immediately.
“Our leadership team will be working diligently to assist all families during this transition, ensuring that every scholar has what they need to succeed in their next community in a prompt and gracious manner.
“We are confident that our scholars will continue to advance as the creative innovators, courageous influencers, and academic leaders of the next generation,” the email concluded as the institution confirmed they are not scheduled to reopen until September 2023.
What is the Donda Academy admissions process?
According to Donda Academy’s site, “We are a tuition-based school.
“Everyone is welcome to apply regardless of financial situation.
“Financial aid and scholarships are available for students who qualify.”
The academy ranges in classes available for students from Pre-K through 12th grade.

There is a guarantee of under 12 students per classroom with a student-to-teacher ratio of 10: 1.
The website states, “Each day, Donda students learn fundamentals, grow in their faith, and experience two enrichment classes.”
The daily schedule for students consists of the following:
- Full school worship
- Core classes of language arts, math, and science
- Lunch and recess
- Enrichment courses including World Language, Visual Art, Film, Choir, and Parkour
How did Kanye rebrand Donda Academy?
In 2024, Kanye rebranded Donda Academy as the Donda Ray Academy, to include his father’s name.
In addition to the name change, the academy will focus on choir, basketball, and dance, as the rapper has hired top choreographers.
The school was also moved to a warehouse space in Chatsworth in the San Fernando Valley.
