Cardi B is back with her first release of 2024, “Like What (Freestyle),” a new single sampling Missy Elliott’s 1999 song “She’s a Bitch.”
After teasing the song with snippets on social media, “Like What (Freestyle)” arrives today along with a music video directed by Cardi B’s mostly-ex-husband, Offset. Taking place in a futuristic mansion, the video depicts Cardi in a number of fun outfits and scenes, delivering the freestyle over the driving, Elliott-sampling beat.
The video ends with the message, “This is just the beginning… stay tuned,” hinting that more music — maybe even Cardi’s full-length follow-up to 2018’s Invasion of Privacy — may be on the way. Watch the video below.
The single is Cardi’s first release since last September’s joint-release with Megan Thee Stallion, “Bongos,” which was named Song of the Week by Consequence. In July, she shared the single “Jealousy,” and had an incident in which she pelted a microphone at a fan who threw a drink at her.
Cardi’s first and only studio album, Invasion of Privacy, arrived in 2018, and has since been followed by a string of celebrated singles, like 2020’s “WAP.” Speaking with Vogue México last year, Cardi revealed that she wasn’t “going to release any more collaborations” in favor of sharing solo material. Looking to her upcoming album, she said: “Everyone always tells me I should put the album out now, they did when I released ‘WAP’ and when I released ‘Up,’ but I always let them know that I’m not going to wait too long to release it after all these singles. So, stay tuned because it’s coming out very soon.”
