In a decision that’s likely to be met with equal parts anticipation and skepticism, Billy McFarland has confirmed in a new interview that Fyre Festival has found a pathway to return to the Caribbean.
“I’ve got to complete the narrative,” McFarland told Daniel Tosh during a recent appearance on the comedian’s podcast, Tosh Show. “We need to execute the dream of Fyre 1.”
In the live events industry, where trust and consistency are paramount, there’s hardly existing precedent for a redemption arc in the space. But the anticipation surrounding Fyre Festival II suggests a collective eagerness to witness whether McFarland can indeed turn the tides of his legacy. He sold the first 100 early-sale passes within a day last summer without announcing a lineup or even a venue, and multiple phases of ticket sales have since followed.
As for the specific location, McFarland opted not to disclose the exact Caribbean island chosen for Fyre’s forthcoming return. However, he did add an element of intrigue, describing to Tosh that attendees will ultimately reach the festival site following a three-hour boat journey from Miami.
Previously, Fyre Festival’s 2017 failure to launch took place on the Bahamian island of Great Exuma. Having served a six-year prison sentence for fraud in the wake of the ill-fated event, McFarland maintains that his obligation to repay $26 million in restitution is his top priority.
